No moral code or ethical principle, no piece of scripture of holy teaching, can be summoned to defend what we have allowed our country to become.” These are the words of Matthew Desmond at the end of his book about housing in Milwaukee, Evicted. This passage expresses what’s wrong with Wisconsin’s high-rise jail in downtown Milwaukee too. Read it while substituting “Wisconsin” for “American” and “state” for “country” and you’ll see why we are fighting to Close the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility.
